The history of Volvo
Volvo is the Swedish world leader in the production of commercial vehicles, trucks, buses, construction equipment, drive systems, industrial applications and financial services. It was founded as a car manufacturer by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larsson. The main goal was to produce the safest possible car on the market. The company was founded on April 14, 1927 in the city of Gothenburg as part of the bearing manufacturer SKF (Svenska Kullagerfabriken AB).
The name "Volvo" was originally registered in May 1915 as a separate company within SFK as a registered trademark with the intention of being used for a special series of rotary bearings, but the idea was short-lived and SKF decided to use "SKF" as a trademark for its products. Volvo AB began production on August 10, 1926, when sales manager Assar Gabrielsson and engineer Gustav Larson began production of 10 prototypes and founded the company Volvo AB within the SFK group. They went on the Stolkhom stock exchange in 1935.
The first series of produced cars "OV4" left the factory on April 14, 1927. The PV651 model replaced the old OV4 model and its success in the market allowed the company to buy its engine manufacturer and thus become a serious car manufacturer. With a production of 10,000 cars a year during 1932, Volvo turned its attention to a new market segment, trying to make its cars cheaper. Such a version of the car was called the PV 51 and was a smaller version of the PV 36 series.
The PV444 model was one of the most important small cars during the war period, achieving notable success on the market during the 60s. The first sports car of the Volvo company was the P1800 model made during the early 60s. Safety and quality are the main guidelines for Volvo, and their 240 series therefore had significantly more safety innovations such as child seats and the like. The 850 model, produced during the 90s, brought front-wheel drive, and with it the company successfully won many awards for safety and handling. The partnership with the Renault company collapsed in 1993 and the company had to find new marketing strategies through the new S40 and V40 models due to extremely high costs. The purchase of Volvo was made on January 28, 1998 by Ford Motor Co. in the amount of 6.45 billion US dollars. Volvo used the proceeds from the sale to buy Scania, another Swedish truck manufacturer, but the purchase was stopped by the EU due to antitrust reasons. Instead, Volvo invested in the French company "Renualt" as well as in the American truck manufacturer "Mack trucks" (which was owned by "Renualt" at the time). The reasons why Volvo decided to have its own production are primarily the high costs of developing new models.
Since August 2010, the corporation "Volvo cars" is owned by the Chinese car manufacturer Geely.
